In the Literature class we’ve been reading the poem of “Birthday” by Christina Rosetti. Pato told us to enter her blog and watch a video then answer some questions in our blogs. I worked with Luli and Catu.
A. What is the theme?
The themes of this poem are joy and nature vs luxurious materials.
B. What is the tone?
The tones are excited, reflective and anxious.
C. What is the main difference between the two stanzas?
In the first stanza, the writer uses similies to compare her feelings to natural images and in the second stanza the voice decides to surround herself with luxurious objects to celebrate that “my love has come to me”.
D. How are the similies in the poem appropiate for the romantic longings the speaker feels?
The author states how happy and excited she feels about her love comig to her by using images , “my heart is like a rainbow shell that paddles in a halcyon sea”. This images represt peace.
E. How is the metaphor of the birthday appropiate?
Because sometimes when you fall in love after you’ve been disappointed, you are so happy, overjoyed, that you think as if you were reborn. So we can interpretate that the birthday is a metaphor for thw rebirth, not the literal meaning of birthday.
F. Make a list of religious symbols. What do they mean in the poem?
Birds: reconciliation and peace
Apple tree: adam and eve, the apple
Rainbow: God´s promisses
